The competences of a researcher

Each year we have to fill in forms to show the university our results and developments of last year. And each year this form seems to be larger. Now I have to fill in my Personal Development Plan, listing the competences that I focussed on last year. These competences should be the competences that are fitting my profile, and surprisingly the only competences that are required for my profile are the 'conceptual ability', 'self-confidence', 'presentation' and 'drive'. Things like 'analytical ability', 'inventiveness', 'learning ability', 'self-reflectance' etc etc are not in the list.

Pattern Recognition is a Human Centered non-Euclidean Problem

Regularities in the world are human defined. Patterns in the observed phenomena are there because we define and recognize them as such. Automatic pattern recognition has thereby to bridge the gap between human judgment and measurements made by artificial sensors.

A good, well performing pattern recognition system is adapted to what we experience as similar and as dissimilar. A natural way to design such a system is thereby based on the pair wise comparison of the objects for which patterns should be recognized. This results in the dissimilarity representation for pattern recognition.
